Sedative herbs

Herbal sedatives are herbs that have calming, relaxing, stress reducing, & minor to moderate pain relieving qualities.  Herbs that are stimulating while also reducing stress are considered adaptogens.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
Sacred blue lily of the Nile [Blue lotus] (Nymphaea caerulea)
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)
California poppy (Eschscholzia californica)
Coptis (Coptis chinensis)
Gou teng [Chinese Cat's Claw] (Uncaria rhynchophylla)
Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)
Corydalis [Yan hu suo] (Corydalis yanhusuo)
Gotu kola (Centella asiatica)
Griffonia seed [5-htp seed] (Griffonia simplicifolia)
Happiness tree bark & flower (Albizia julibrissin)
Holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum)
Kava kava (Piper methysticum)
Hou Po [Magnolia bark] (Magnolia officinalis)
Lemon balm (melissa officinalis)
Mulungu (Erythrina mulungu)
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)
Red Poppy flowers (Papaver rhoeas)
Phellodendron bark [Huang bo] (Phellodendron amurense)
Dan shen [Red sage root] (Salvia miltiorrhiza)
Ling-Zi fungus [Reishi mushroom] (Ganoderma lucidum)
Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora)
St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum)
